The people closest to a problem should lead the conversation about it.

Bukky Smith is a communications strategist and movement builder working across international development, youth leadership and philanthropy.

The international development sector has a communications problem it would rather not talk about.

It raises money using images and stories that can strip dignity from the very communities it claims to serve, treats people as content, and calls it awareness. Bukky Smith works at the intersection of communications and social change because she believes the sector can do better, and that doing better starts with considering power and who gets to shape the narrative.

She works in communications within the international development sector, where her focus spans strategy, campaigns and thought leadership on how organisations tell stories and who they serve when they do. Bukky leads #OverExposed, a growing movement challenging how the sector uses imagery in fundraising, and writes and speaks on dignity-centred communications, locally led development and the ethics of how organisations represent the communities they work with.

Beyond her professional work, Bukky has built organisations designed to create lasting opportunities for people and communities. She founded Young and Mentored in 2019, a youth leadership movement for young people and co-founded Givers Trust, a UK-registered charity supporting widows and vulnerable children across Africa. She serves as Board Chair of Givers Trust, sits on the boards of multiple organisations and is a founding woman of The Women's Collective.

She has produced documentaries as part of UNFPA-funded work, led the production of a university manual addressing violence against women and girls under the UNESCO Spotlight Initiative, and delivered EU-funded work spanning public health and child welfare.

She holds an MA in Public Policy from Nottingham Trent University and is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations.

Focus Areas

01

Strategic Communications

Most organisations treat communications as something bolted on after the decisions have already been made.

Bukky believes communications is strategic. It shapes how organisations understand themselves, how they relate to the communities they serve and whether their messaging reflects what they actually stand for.

Her work spans communications strategy, campaigns, editorial direction and organisational positioning, helping organisations make their communications clearer, more intentional and more connected to the change they are trying to create.

02

Ethical Storytelling

The international development sector has normalised using stories and images of people experiencing poverty, exclusion and crisis to generate attention and income.

Changing that requires asking harder questions about power, dignity and who communications are ultimately designed to serve.

Through #OverExposed, Bukky advocates for the sector to move from intention to practice.

03

Leadership and Governance

Bukky brings a strategic communications perspective to leadership and governance, helping organisations think more critically about their voice, influence, accountability and the relationship between what they say and how they operate.

04

Movement Building

Bukky has founded and helped build organisations and movements designed to bring people together around shared challenges and create structures that can continue beyond any individual project, event or funding cycle.

Young and Mentored and Givers Trust reflect different expressions of that approach: building communities, creating opportunities and turning shared values into sustained action.

The gap isn't talent. It's access to the right conversations.

Young and Mentored exists because the gap between where young people are and where they want to be is not a gap of talent or ambition. It is a gap in access to the right conversations, the right people and the right opportunities at the right time.

Founded in 2019 and relaunched in 2026 with a sharper vision, the movement connects young leaders through summits, mentoring conversations and spaces designed to build confidence, character and perspective.

The organisation provides monthly financial support to widows, helps children access education and supports initiatives that strengthen livelihoods and community wellbeing. It works with trusted local partners and communities to ensure support reaches the people who need it.

Operating since 2021 and registered in the UK in 2026, Givers Trust is led by a dedicated team, with Bukky serving as Board Chair.
